About Breast Surgery
Breast surgery covers several procedures, including breast augmentation and breast reduction. You do not need to know which procedure you want before you come; the first visit is to discuss your concern and whether surgery is suitable.
When to see a specialist
- 01Concerns about size, shape, symmetry or physical comfort
- 02Questions about reconstructive or corrective surgery
- 03Wanting to understand the options without committing to a procedure
Whether treatment is suitable can only be decided after a consultation and examination.

Your consultation
What happens at the consultation.
At the first visit the doctor listens to your concern, takes a medical history and examines you. Not everyone who comes for a consultation needs a procedure.
Treatment planning
How the plan is decided.
The plan depends on your anatomy, the examination, what you want to change and your general health. The doctor will explain the options and their limitations.

In detail
Breast surgery: what to know.
Breast augmentation and reduction
The most common breast operations are augmentation, to increase size or even out a difference, and reduction, to reduce size and weight. Each has its own page with more detail.
Breast lift (mastopexy)
- Removes excess skin and tightens the tissue to raise sagging breasts. It can also make large areolas smaller.
- It does not add much size, so it can be combined with implants or a reduction if a change in size is also wanted.
- The scar goes around the areola, around and down (“lollipop”), or in an anchor shape, depending on how much lift is needed.
- It is best done once you have finished having children and your weight is stable, because pregnancy and weight change can undo the result.
Uneven breasts
- A difference in size or shape can be improved with an implant on one side, or a reduction or lift on the other.
- Some difference between the two sides is normal, and perfect symmetry is not achievable.
Breast reconstruction
- Rebuilds the breast after mastectomy, either at the same time or after cancer treatment has finished.
- It can use an implant, your own tissue (for example from the abdomen, back or thigh), or both. It is often followed by reconstruction of the nipple.
- Reconstruction is planned together with the breast cancer team.
